Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of game is Hogwarts MOO?
Besides for being a text-based real-time game, Hogwarts MOO is a consent-based role playing game that uses very little if any coding and commands to manipulate your characters. There are no coded spells or objects to earn, for instance, and no stats or experience points. Everything from classes to Quidditch are roleplayed.
I am new to gaming. Is this game for me?
Our players are tolerant and willing to help out those who are newbies to gaming completely. We do recommend that you read through all of the tutorial to familiarize yourself with how a MOO works. If you have questions, you are more than welcome to contact any of the on-duty guides (which can be retrieved by typing @guides while logged on to the game) or to utilize the questions channel.
How do I get a character?
We have an extensive on-game tutorial which will lead you right to the correct command to do so. Please make sure you read the entire tutorial, as it is all important information to have for your time at Hogwarts MOO.
How long does it take for my character to get approved?
Usually character applications are reviewed within a day or two, but if there is a holiday or a major event (such as a book or movie release, or a major world catastrophe), it may take a little longer. Please do not pester the guides about this, as it is a voluntary position and doing so may prolong the procedure.
It must also be noted that characters must be fully approved at least one week before the sorting in order to participate in the festivities, due to the customized nature of said ceremonies. You still may have a character in the first year if you create too close to the sorting to participate - this simply means that you will not be able to participate in the ceremony on-camera. (If you are unsure exactly what this means, please read help assumed on-game.)
Can I have more than one character?
There is no specific limit on the number of characters that any player can have. We do, however, ask that the player moderate himself appropriately so that all of his characters are active. There are rules that stipulate that no player may have two characters in the same role, as well. (Two first year characters, for instance, or two Prefect characters. For more information, please review help charlaws on-game.) To encourage such, we provide a variety of role options, including students and a variety of adult roles.
Can I have special IC magic, be a dark wizard, [insert other special request here]?
Most special abilities (such as animagus, child prodigies, etc) and privileged roles (Professor, Prefect, Head of a Ministry Department) must be applied for and approved by the administration. Some roles require a certain level of activity and many require an updated background for approval. Several abilities and roles are currently restricted, meaning there is no way to have them in-game. Specific policies for such requests may be reviewed via special magic and help roles on-game.
My character was deleted. Can I get it back?
That depends. Characters that have been in deleted status for over a year are deleted permanently. If you deleted your character yourself and the character was still a student, it is deleted permanently. Other than that, however, characters can usually be restored. The best thing to do is to review 'help deleted characters' on game, and contact the admins via assist with the pertinent information. If you have a particularly long or complicated request, you may use @issues, but this is only for times when it is not a simple character restoration.
